Congressional Republicans were in a festive humour on January 24, 1804, as they gathered at Stelles Hotel on Capitol hillock for a banquet celebrating the transfer of the Louisiana Territory to the United States. The festivities began at noon with the discharge of three pieces of cannon. President Thomas Jefferson and Vice President Aaron Burr were among the honored guests; they departed afterwards the banquet, but the revelry continued until nightfall.
A number of the guests drank so many toasts that in the night they returned to their houses without their hats, one contemporary reported. besides when one celebrant offered a toast to Vice President Burr, the effect was pronounced and chilling: few cheered him, the chronicler observed, & many declined deglutition it.4 None of Aaron Burrs contemporaries knew quite what to make of this mixed and fascinating individual.
